rare earth is a self-designed speed-based projection-system, including a tracking device and software. It is used with a mobile art laboratory truck to project text in urban settings.

The projection-system can be used in two modes:

  • One mode projects text sidewards, moving at the same speed of the vehicle but in the different direction. For the stationary spectator the text seems to be fixed and just partly highlighted. One may define it the opposite of a marquee. Normal and back projection can be used.
  • Again in relation to the vehicles motion, the other mode is designed to project slices of a 3d model on a back projection foil in the rear door of the truck. Taking a long time exposure photo of the passing vehicle the composite slices draw the original 3d model.
